Series 2 — Korean Words
Compound Words 2 — One Pattern, Dozens of Words
Place · Nature · Snow: Three Groups of Productive Compound Patterns
Day 9. Compound Words 2
Quick Review: Day 8
Day 8 gave us one key question:
Can you guess the meaning by breaking it apart — or not? Transparent compounds → expand them with patterns.
Today, we do exactly that.
What "Pattern Expansion" Means
Start with English.
moon + light = moonlight
sun + light = sunlight
star + light = starlight
flash + light = flashlight
One word — light — generates four new words. Korean works the same way.
달(moon) + 빛(light) = 달빛
별(star) + 빛 = 별빛
햇(sun) + 빛 = 햇빛
불(fire) + 빛 = 불빛
What -light does in English, 빛 does in Korean. Same logic, different language.
Today's patterns — three groups:
Group 1. Place & Space — X+집 / X+가게 / X+방 / X+길
Group 2. Nature & Senses — X+바람 / X+하늘 / X+소리 / X+빛
Group 3. 눈 — 눈(eye)+X / 눈(snow)+X
Group 1. Place & Space
X + 집
집 means house. In compound words, it expands to mean "a place that sells ~ / a place for ~."
꽃(flower) + 집 = 꽃집 flower shop
빵(bread) + 집 = 빵집 bakery
술(alcohol) + 집 = 술집 bar, pub
고기(meat) + 집 = 고기집 Korean BBQ restaurant
밥(rice/meal) + 집 = 밥집 casual restaurant
분식(snacks) + 집 = 분식집 Korean snack bar (tteokbokki, kimbap, etc.)
떡(rice cake) + 집 = 떡집 rice cake shop
국수(noodles) + 집 = 국숫집 noodle restaurant
In English, -shop, -store, -house, and -bar each cover different types of places. In Korean, 집 handles all of them.
X + 가게
There's a second pattern that works almost identically.
꽃(flower) + 가게 = 꽃가게 flower shop
빵(bread) + 가게 = 빵가게 bakery
옷(clothes) + 가게 = 옷가게 clothing store
신발(shoes) + 가게 = 신발가게 shoe store
과일(fruit) + 가게 = 과일가게 fruit stand/store
집 vs 가게:
꽃집 = slightly more colloquial, warmer feel
꽃가게 = slightly more neutral/standard
Same meaning. In everyday conversation, 집 is more common (꽃집, 빵집). 가게 sounds a little more like a sign on a storefront.
빵: This word came from Portuguese pão — a foreign import. But it's been fully absorbed into Korean compound patterns: 빵집, 빵가게, 빵순이 (a person obsessed with bread). Loanwords enter the pattern, too.
X + 방
방 means room. In compound words, it creates "a space where you do ~."
노래(song) + 방 = 노래방 karaoke room
찜질(heat spa) + 방 = 찜질방 Korean sauna/spa
공부(study) + 방 = 공부방 study room
놀이(play) + 방 = 놀이방 playroom
독서(reading) + 방 = 독서방 reading room
PC + 방 = PC방 internet café
작업(work) + 방 = 작업방 studio, workspace
집 vs 방:
집 → a shop you go into from outside (꽃집, 빵집)
방 → an indoor space for a specific activity (노래방, 찜질방)
국숫집 ✓ / 국수방 ✗. 노래방 ✓ / 노래집 ✗. There's no perfectly neat rule — usage has hardened over time.
노래방: In K-dramas, norebang scenes are everywhere. It's not called "karaoke" — it's 노래방. 노래(song) + 방(room). Even internationally, the word "norebang" has spread as a piece of K-culture.
찜질방: 찜질(heat therapy) + 방(room). The steaming-egg-eating-while-having-deep-conversations scene? That's 찜질방. A staple of Korean drama comfort scenes.
X + 길
길 means path, road, way. The noun in front describes the environment or nature of the path.
밤(night) + 길 = 밤길 road at night
산(mountain) + 길 = 산길 mountain trail
골목(alley) + 길 = 골목길 alley, narrow street
봄(spring) + 길 = 봄길 a path in spring
꽃(flower) + 길 = 꽃길 flower-lined path
빗(rain) + 길 = 빗길 wet, rainy road
등교(going to school) + 길 = 등굣길 the way to school
하교(leaving school) + 길 = 하굣길 the way home from school
해안(coast) + 길 = 해안길 coastal path
둘레(perimeter)+ 길 = 둘레길 trail around a mountain or lake
오솔 + 길 = 오솔길 narrow winding path ← 오솔 isn't used alone
지름 + 길 = 지름길 shortcut ← 지름 isn't used alone
꽃길: "꽃길만 걷자" is all over K-pop and K-drama. Literally "let's only walk on flower-lined paths" — it means "may your life be nothing but happiness." A transparent compound that became a cultural shorthand.
✏️ Activity 1 — Build the Word
Add 집 / 가게 / 방 / 길 to each word below to make a compound word. Write the English meaning too. (More than one answer may be possible.)
1. 치킨(fried chicken) → _______ meaning: _______________________
2. 생선(fish) → _______ meaning: _______________________
3. 게임(game) → _______ meaning: _______________________
4. 자전거(bicycle) → _______ meaning: _______________________
5. 오르막(uphill slope) → _______ meaning: _______________________
6. 책(book) → _______ meaning: _______________________
7. 빨래(laundry) → _______ meaning: _______________________
8. 내리막(downhill) → _______ meaning: _______________________
Hint: 오르막 and 내리막 only attach to 길.
✏️ Activity 2 — 집 or 방?
Which one is actually used? Mark ○ for the real word and ✗ for the one that doesn't exist.
1. 노래방 / 노래집
2. 술집 / 술방
3. 찜질방 / 찜질집
4. 빵집 / 빵방
5. 독서방 / 독서집
6. 분식집 / 분식방
7. 공부방 / 공부집
Group 2. Nature & Senses
X + 바람
봄(spring) + 바람 = 봄바람 spring breeze
가을(autumn) + 바람 = 가을바람 autumn wind
밤(night) + 바람 = 밤바람 night breeze
산(mountain) + 바람 = 산바람 mountain wind
바다(sea) + 바람 = 바닷바람 sea breeze
찬(cold) + 바람 = 찬바람 cold wind
봄바람: "봄바람에 설레다" — spring breeze as a feeling, not just a weather report. "봄바람 같은 사람" means someone who makes your heart flutter, warm and exciting. The word carries emotional weight beyond its literal meaning.
X + 하늘
밤(night) + 하늘 = 밤하늘 night sky
봄(spring) + 하늘 = 봄하늘 spring sky
가을(autumn) + 하늘 = 가을하늘 autumn sky
파란(blue) + 하늘 = 파란하늘 blue sky
흐린(cloudy) + 하늘 = 흐린하늘 cloudy sky
X + 소리
English says "sound of ___" — a phrase. Korean makes it one word.
비(rain) + 소리 = 빗소리 sound of rain
바람(wind) + 소리 = 바람소리 sound of wind
발(foot) + 소리 = 발소리 sound of footsteps
웃음(laughter) + 소리 = 웃음소리 sound of laughter
울음(crying) + 소리 = 울음소리 sound of crying
새(bird) + 소리 = 새소리 birdsong
물(water) + 소리 = 물소리 sound of water
파도(wave) + 소리 = 파도소리 sound of waves
천둥(thunder) + 소리 = 천둥소리 sound of thunder
심장(heart) + 소리 = 심장소리 heartbeat sound
빗소리 · 발소리: K-drama sound design staples. Rain falling in an emotional scene. Footsteps approaching down a hallway. These two words are almost characters in their own right.
X + 빛
달(moon) + 빛 = 달빛 moonlight
별(star) + 빛 = 별빛 starlight
햇(sun) + 빛 = 햇빛 sunlight
불(fire) + 빛 = 불빛 glow, firelight
무지개(rainbow) + 빛 = 무지개빛 rainbow glow, iridescent light
눈(eye) + 빛 = 눈빛 the look in one's eyes ← semi-transparent
눈빛 is semi-transparent. 눈(eye) + 빛(light) — but the actual meaning is "the emotion in someone's eyes, their gaze." The literal and real meanings don't perfectly match.
✏️ Activity 3 — Nature & Senses: Pattern Expansion
Add 바람 / 하늘 / 소리 / 빛 to each word below. More than one answer may be possible.
1. 여름(summer) → _______________________
2. 폭풍(storm) → _______________________
3. 새벽(dawn) → _______________________
4. 무지개(rainbow) → _______________________
5. 겨울(winter) → _______________________
Group 3. 눈 — One Word, Two Meanings
In Korean, 눈(目) means eye and 눈(雪) means snow. Same spelling, same pronunciation.
This one character creates two completely different sets of compound words.
눈(eye) + X
눈(eye) + 빛 = 눈빛 the look in one's eyes semi-transparent
눈(eye) + 길 = 눈길 one's gaze, line of sight semi-transparent
눈(eye) + 물 = 눈물 tears opaque (eye water ≠ tears)
눈(eye) + 꺼풀 = 눈꺼풀 eyelid
눈(eye) + 썹 = 눈썹 eyebrow
눈(eye) + 동자 = 눈동자 pupil (of the eye)
눈(snow) + X
눈(snow) + 사람 = 눈사람 snowman
눈(snow) + 꽃 = 눈꽃 snowflake (snow that looks like a flower)
눈(snow) + 밭 = 눈밭 snow field
눈(snow) + 덩이 = 눈덩이 snowball
눈(snow) + 보라 = 눈보라 blizzard, snowstorm
눈길 — Same Word, Two Meanings
One compound sits in both groups:
눈(eye) + 길 = 눈길 one's gaze ("눈길을 끌다" = to catch someone's eye)
눈(snow) + 길 = 눈길 snow-covered road ("눈길 조심해" = careful on snowy roads)
Context tells you which is which. Even native Korean speakers need the context.
눈물: 눈(eye) + 물(water). Day 8's star example of an opaque compound. "Eye water" isn't tears — the whole is not the sum of its parts. 눈물 appears in virtually every Korean ballad ever written.
눈보라: 눈(snow) + 보라. 보라 doesn't stand alone in modern Korean, but it carried the meaning of "something surging or swirling." A blizzard, in one word.
✏️ Activity 4 — 눈: Eye or Snow?
For each compound below, decide whether 눈 means eye or snow. Then write the English meaning.
1. 눈빛 (eye / snow) meaning: _______________________
2. 눈보라 (eye / snow) meaning: _______________________
3. 눈물 (eye / snow) meaning: _______________________
4. 눈사람 (eye / snow) meaning: _______________________
5. 눈썹 (eye / snow) meaning: _______________________
6. 눈꽃 (eye / snow) meaning: _______________________
눈길 can be either — only context tells you which.
